New Pickleball Rules Just Dropped

Ultimate Mother's Day gift guide. Upgrade your overheads.

Few things in pickleball spark more debate than the rules. Kitchen calls, serve legality, hindrances, and line calls—everyone has an opinion, and everyone is sure they’re right.

Now pro pickleball is stepping in with a new 71-page UPA-A rulebook for the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball, covering everything from conduct to challenges to paddle throws. It even answers one of the sport’s strangest questions: can you blow the ball over the net? We break down the biggest changes below.

Inside:

  • Step up your overhead attack

  • Line calling could be on the way out

  • Give your mom what she really wants for Mother’s Day

📖 New Rules for MLP and the PPA Tour

The UPA-A released its first official rulebook, setting the standards for rules, officiating, and player conduct across the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball. The changes go live May 22 at the opening event of the 2026 MLP season in Dallas.

A few headline grabbers:

  • Drop serves are out. It’s volley serve only from here on out

  • If a referee sees anything questionable on the serve—release, motion, mechanics—it can be ruled an immediate fault

  • Lose on a video challenge, the first one is free, the second gets you a mark, and the third will award your opponent a point

  • New conduct cards are in play: blue = warning, orange = point to opponent, four oranges = match forfeiture

  • And yes, blowing the ball over the net is now officially a fault

Keep in mind these rules only apply to the pros in MLP and the PPA Tour, so resist the urge to pull an orange card on Susan at your local park.

The sport keeps getting bigger, and the rulebook is growing with it. See the new UPA-A Rulebook here.

🙈 Stop Missing Easy Overheads

Nothing swings momentum faster than missing a put-away overhead. The good news: most overhead mistakes come from footwork and timing, not lack of power.

  • Get behind the ball instead of letting it drift over your head

  • Stop backpedaling, turn your hips and shuffle back to stay balanced

  • Swing at 70–80% power for cleaner contact and better placement

Most players miss because they rush and try to crush it. Learn the simple fixes that turn overheads into reliable winners.

👀 Pickleball’s Line Calling Problem Is Finally Being Addressed

Bad line calls have gone from annoying moments to a real issue in pro pickleball, and the sport is now testing technology to solve it.

  • The UPA has started using automated line calling, while systems like PlayReplay, Owl AI, and Close Call Replay are all taking different approaches

  • What matters most isn’t flashy tech—it’s speed, clarity, and keeping the game moving

If done right, fans get cleaner broadcasts, players get fairer calls, and matches avoid unnecessary drama.

If done wrong? More delays, more confusion, and a version of pickleball that feels overcomplicated.

🧠 You Drill Your Dink. Why Aren’t You Drilling Your Mind?

Most players practice shots for hours, yet expect their mental game to magically appear at 10-9 match point.

  • Just like dinks and resets, confidence and composure need daily reps to become automatic

One simple framework: Notice It. Name It. Neutralize It. Catch the negative thought, label it, then choose a better response. Players who train this recover faster from mistakes, stay present longer, and stop unraveling in big moments.

Your physical game runs on muscle memory—your mental game runs on what you’ve practiced too.
