The Serve Rule Everyone Gets Wrong

The scariest moment in MLP history. The X Factor Missing from Your Game.

One of the biggest complaints about pickleball is that it's too dangerous. Turns out, they were right. You can take a ball to the face, throw out your shoulder on a backhand, and now apparently the scoreboard is getting in on it too.

This week at MLP New York, a 30-foot LED board was blown over by a wind gust mid-match, landing directly on Brooklyn's Rachel Rohrabacher. Thankfully she walked off under her own power and was back competing by Sunday.

Full recap inside, plus:

  • Everything you're getting wrong about legal serves and how refs are now cracking down

  • Why your "spin paddle" probably isn't spinning the way it used to

  • The mental framework that separates players who perform under pressure from those who don't

Before we get to the scoreboard, we have to talk about what happened to it. On Thursday, a wind gust sent a 30-foot LED baseline board crashing onto the court mid-match, landing on Brooklyn's Rachel Rohrabacher.

She was helped off, walked out under her own power, and later shared a heartfelt post thanking everyone who rushed to her aid. By Sunday, she was back competing in mixed doubles, which is about the best possible ending to a scary story.

Now, the pickleball:

  • New Jersey 5s are the hottest team in the league, winning their third event and securing a playoff berth with a first-place finish.

  • Brooklyn showed real depth, finishing second in the standings despite playing most of the event without Rohrabacher, thanks largely to Hannah Blatt filling in seamlessly.

  • Texas Ranchers turned heads by handing New Jersey their only loss of the weekend in a Sunday Dreambreaker.

  • St. Louis didn't play this week but made the biggest news off the court, landing Hunter Johnson in a four-team blockbuster that also moved Elsie Hendershot and John Lucian Goins to Chicago and Mari Humberg to Atlanta.

🙅 Legal vs. Illegal Serves: What Players Still Get Wrong

The serve causes more on-court arguments than any other shot in pickleball, and most disputes come down to a few rules players misread. Here's the quick version:

  • Volley serve: contact must be clearly below the waist, paddle head clearly below the wrist, and the swing must move in a clear upward arc.

  • Drop serve: no paddle rules at all, the ball just has to fall on its own, no toss, no push.

  • Spin: banned only on the release. Once your paddle contacts the ball, spin away.

Modern moves like the drop serve and high-arc spin serves are completely legal when the key requirements are met.

😵‍💫 Best Pickleball Paddles for Spin That Last

That gritty new paddle won't stay that way forever, and which surface you choose determines how much spin you keep months from now. Spin comes down to four approaches:

  • Raw T700 carbon fiber: texture built into the face, dependable long-term spin.

  • Peel ply: a manufacturing technique that creates raw carbon's natural texture.

  • Sprayed grit: maximum spin out of the box, but it smooths faster with heavy play.

  • Engineered surfaces: Selkirk's InfiniGrit and 11SIX24's Hex Grit, built specifically to resist wear.

Our top picks for long-lasting spin include the 11SIX24 Power 2, Selkirk LABS Project Boomstik, and Franklin C45.
